I often get asked, “What is it like to delivery a baby?”  My response is always the same.  Women deliver their babies; I really just help guide them.  Second Chance is a beautiful, raw and poignant story of the role of birthing in women’s lives.  It takes us on one women’s journey yet it is so real that it is almost impossible to not take it to heart as partly our own.  It reminds us that all our relationships are at the core of bringing life into this world.  Not all women choose to become a parent; many women are unable to, and not all women view birth in the same way.  The one theme that ties us all together however is trust.  We must trust our own choices and know they are right for us.  We must trust our bodies and know that they are ready for this experience.  We must trust that our patients know what they need in the face of the moment as well as along the way.  And we must be able to trust that our providers’ recommendations are clinically sound as they guide women in the process.  I think we can get there, at least I must trust that we can.

  The author’s memoir is an emotional, cathartic review of her struggle with feelings of anger toward the medical team and guilt over her earlier compliance. It is also a useful advocacy guide for women who are considering a home birth, especially those who have had a C-section. The medical profession’s rule of thumb is that if a woman has had a C-section, she is at greater risk attempting a vaginal delivery the second time around. According to Derich, the statistics don’t really support this assumption. And she notes that in the United States, the “national cesarean rate was 32.2 percent” in 2014, many of which were not emergency procedures. The skillful prose is direct, quite graphic, unsettling, and not for the squeamish.

  Your ability to write such a compelling story made it difficult for me to put the book down. I was immediately drawn into your narrative. Your descriptions made me feel your pain and anguish and bewilderment over your reaction to the unnecessary cesarean. I had no idea that many of these are unnecessarily performed. And I was horrified to discover that these surgeries are, many times, performed more for the convenience of the doctor than for the patient. That was an eye-opener for me.

  I found myself rooting for you to have a natural birth and your strong, descriptive words made me feel as though I was in the room with you. I sincerely hope more women read your book. Your honesty was searing, yet gripping. It is very well written. You captured perfectly all the emotions involved in giving birth, especially in a manner that is comfortable for both mother and baby. The way you described how wrong you felt about the caesarean, which continued on long after you had your baby was powerful. This is such an important book. It gives women permission to question what they don’t feel comfortable with and makes it okay to say no. Great job.
